Anne Francis, the tall, cool, sultry blond who is best remembered for her roles in the sci-fi classic “Forbidden Planet” (1956) and as the sexy female private eye in the TV series “Honey West“(1965-66), died in a Santa Barbara, California retirement home on January 2, 2011, due to complications from pancreatic cancer. She was 80 yrs old.
Anne Francis was born Sept. 16, 1930 in Ossining, New York. She started modeling as a five year old during the Great Depression, made her broadway debut at age 11, and got her first role in a feature film at age 17 in “This Time For Keeps” (1947). She had roles in over thirty movies, including “Blackboard Jungle“(1955), “The Hired Gun“(1957), “Funny Girl“(1968), and “Hook, Line, and Sinker“(1969). It was her role as Altaira in the 1956 sci-fi classic “Forbidden Classic” ,which also starred Walter Pidgeon and Leslie Nielsen, that gave her cult status. Francis never really became a big star in movies and had her greatest success in television. She had countless guest appearances in many television series including, “Twilight Zone”, “The Virginian”, “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.”, and “Murder She Wrote”. Her television career spanned five decades with her last appearance on television in a 2004 episode of “Cold Case”. It was her leading role as Honey West in the television series “Honey West” that she is best remembered. As the glamorous and sexy karate-chopping private eye Honey, she had a eye popping wardrobe, drove a custom built Cobra convertible, and had a man hating ocelot as a pet. Anne Francis won a Golden Globe as best female TV star and received an Emmy nomination for her portrayal of Honey West.
